The Kelly Mine Preservation Society ( KMPS ) was formed in 1984, to save and restore this important monument to Dartmoor mining heritage.

The mine is located on the eastern flank of Dartmoor, within the National Park. Work commenced in 1985 and has continued with the regular monthly meetings every first Sunday.

The restoration work is divided into projects which are allocated to groups and individuals. A sub-group meets on Wednesdays to undertake more extended projects.

Work groups are encouraged to pay careful attention to the details provided by plans and photographs brought to light by the Society's researchers and the recollections of ex-miners. Several surviving miners have been traced and their recorded interviews have provided much valuable information into the miners' working practices and conditions.

The Society is funded entirely by membership subscriptions and individual donations. Many of the members are not actively involved in the restoration work and are kept up-to-date with progress by means of a monthly newsletter (

The affairs of the Society are guided by a committee of nine elected members which meets quarterly. The AGM, usually held on the first Sunday in November, marks the beginning of the new membership year. It provides the opportunity for the membership to review the progress of the Society and elect the new committee.
